MEMOIR AND LIFE WRITING
Why Should You Write Your Story?
Maybe you just want to capture a particular period or event in your life. Or maybe you want to recount half a century of memories for your children and grandchildren. Whatever the reason, there's a real magic in preserving your history, one chapter at a time.

Usually, there are two ways of doing this. Memoirs can be written at any point in your life. The focus tends to be on a certain time or period - for example, the country you left behind to emigrate to the UK, your career in the Army, or adventures sailing around the world. It's a great way to look back at a specific time and collate your memories of it.

A life story, on the other hand, is an autobiography. It looks at your whole life, from birth up until now. This, too, can be written at any point in your life, but the end result is more encompassing than a memoir, as it involves a longer time period.

You might choose to retell your story with photographs and mementos; with your favourite song lyrics; in prose or poetry: this is your story, so you have creative control. With my help, you will bring these stories to life, recreating your life's journey - one chapter at a time.

As for me? Well... the way we think about the past has always fascinated me. My maternal grandparents both died long before I was born. I would have loved to have known them; the stories my mother tells of them provide fascinating but choppy insights. Luckily, my grandmother made voice recordings of her life, which we then digitised from cassette tape and transcribed. These transcriptions have allowed me to tap into her world, her history, her way of thinking, the society in which she lived and the choices she had to make. Her story gives me perspective on my own way of thinking and living.
Her story is notable - just like yours.

THE PROCESS
1
MEETINGS
We start the process with a free, informal chat about what you envision for the project.
Then, using old photographs and mementos as guides, we follow this up with a series of interviews, to build up a full story.

Interview lengths start at around 3-4 hours for a shorter memoir and 18-20 hours for a full autobiography.
2
STORYTELLING
Using our interviews and my notes from our conversations as a baseline, I start writing.
To create a compelling memoir in your own voice, I include all the major moments and particular details that you feel have shaped you.

You have total artistic control, so letters, poems, drawings - anything that speaks to you - can also be included.
3
DESIGN
Once the manuscript is complete, you now decide how you'd like it to look.
Shorter memoirs will require fewer pages; a long life story will need around 200 pages, depending on how many photographs you add.
We will discuss all this at this stage, along with cover design and binding.
4
PRINTING
With your sign-off, I send your book to the printers, where it will be bound.
Your hardback memoir or life story will arrive in just a few weeks' time.

These books are wonderful to share with friends and family. They also make a great present. If you want to gift someone the chance to write their story, please get in touch.

ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Kate Hodal, a multi-award winning writer and journalist, mum of four, Los Angeles-to-London transplant and teller of bad jokes. In a past life, I was a foreign correspondent for a national broadsheet and frequent magazine contributor, often focusing on modern-day slavery and other human rights stories.
One thing I've learned after 20 years of interviewing people is that I love interviewing people. Everyone has a story to tell. It's easy to think our own past would be a boring read, but it's never the case. Whether you want to write a full memoir, create a book of snapshots or just a have a chat about your project, I'd love to hear from you.
